Comment:

from like 96-7 i religiously collected cmj cds - there was usually a great song or two on each one and i'd make mix tapes out of what i found on there. this is from aug 8 1997, songs culled from cmj 44 & 48; pop culture mag cd #3; and huh comp 2 (remember huh? like the precursor to cmj, only when it began they sent out free videos too, it was super cheap but they must have folded by now). i just dug this one out of an old box of tapes and am at present remembering every single one of these songs. with fondness. 'k, bye.

you know, i may be dating myself here, but the first time i heard "only shallow" by my bloody valentine was on one of those CMJ comps back in 93... (it was an old comp at the time...)

Cool! I must have more than 50 of those CMJ CDs in one place or another. They were always good for at least two great songs, sometimes more, sometimes less. One day I'm going to burn all the best tunes on to one CD. The awesome Ninian Hawick song on my Girlie Pop mix was taken from an old CMJ CD. I think the magazine's gone a bit downhill in the last couple years (style over content), but the CDs are still OK.

i remember when i saw that ninian hawick song on your mix, wondering if it'd ever shown up anywhere but that cmj comp and the 7" i think they said it was on. it's a fun one. -- i have to say though that when i knew less about music the cds were much more fun to listen to. i still like the charts though, keeps me up to date. :)

Geez! I guess I seem less cool now--since you now know that I got that song off a mainstream magazine compilation and not a rare indie 7-inch! :) I think the Pest 5000 came from a CMJ CD as well. Man, my indie credibility is going right out the window! I think I'll shut up now.
