After graduating to the big time, Guster fleshed out their barebones, thrift-shop-pop sound for a fuller, fatter feel. Keep It Together, their first record for Reprise, boasted the big, bold, power-pop zoom of “Amsterdam” (see our Basics) and the almost-Cars-like drive of “Homecoming King.” But Guster still liked to keep things loose, light, and simple, and they couldn’t resist sneaking acoustic tunes onto EPs. They pay tribute to the original acoustic alt-rockers, Violent Femmes, on a feisty version of the latter’s college-rock classic “Blister in the Sun,” and they even scale down “Amsterdam” to an acoustic, back-porch feel on a session for the famous Morning Becomes Eclectic radio show.
