Comment:
31) In the Ghetto; 32) Suspicious Minds. What can I say about Elvis that hasn't already been said? Nothing, really. Although there's a significant argument for him being overrated, I think the opposite is the case in the music circles in which I normally truck. Granted, his music is spotty at best post-Army, but some of those spots ("Are You Lonesome Tonight?", "Little Sister", "His Latest Flame", "Suspicious Minds", "In the Ghetto") constitute some of his best work. I am eternally grateful, however, that I managed to outgrow my old bias against Elvis that dated from my mother's appreciaton of his "Fat" period and discovered the Sun Sessions (after reading about them for years and years with increasing interest) early in my college years. [Revised substantially on 5/2/05.]Feedback:
Great mix, Rob. It's funny, I was actually talking to someone about Elvis yesterday (actually, he mentioned Elvis) - and I was saying it's too bad about his fat period, but the guy was saying you should overlook your bias against that period because he had some really good stuff from that era as well.
Another nice Elvis mix. I've got to get more Elvis for my collection...
see...i was just telling a friend last night how he was the most overrated rock musician ever. i actually like his "fat" period not for the music, but for what it represents...the excess and decadence of commercial rock n roll.
Nothin' wrong with Elvis. I often think the "backlash" against him stems from oversaturation and being held up to be this super-icon (I think the same can be said for the constant backlas towards the likes of The Beatles and Sinatra). But you gotta admit in all the love for Elvis, there is something truly kitsch about the post-army, pill-poppin',twisted image he became that is clearly an ironic metaphor for America. Well, on that note, I hear Elvis calling...the smell of bacon is in the air....Elvis I am sad.
i was going to talk about the coolness/tackyness fo elvis as is represented in blue hawaii...but after CASETTA and Brandt have there clever little ramblings, i may sound really dumb so i'll just nod... (yea rob)
Ah, Rosie--Blue Hawaii is cool, you never sound dumb. Personally I like that goofy Elvis great--"Do The Clam"
yeah, this may be the decade that elvis gets some serious, critical re-evaluation. i mean, art critics were rethinking norman freaking rockwell's body of work just recently, so it wouldn't surprise me. but i'm still with brandt, casetta, and rosie. there's something about sequined jumpsuits and photo ops as nixon's #1 dea agent that just absolutely defines the grotesque absurdity of american pop culture. it didn't help to see recent posters of britney spears in the same get-up for her vegas show, either. elvis is still in michael jackson territory for me - i just need some more time.
over the summer, i a recording of "are you lonesome tonight?" from a show he did in vegas quite late in the "fat period." midway through the first verse, he made an unexpected lyrical edit: "do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?/ do you gaze at your forehead and wish you had hair?" he then burst out laughing and was unable to recover for more than one line at a time for the rest of the song, at one point forcing out something to the effect of, "there it goes, ladies and gentlemen, [however many years] of rock and roll glory straight down the drain. oh, dear ..." throughout the entire thing, his back-up soprano sang stubbornly on.
clearly, the word "heard" should've appeared about five words into that first sentence. one day i will recover the ability to type.
people who don't dig elvis for reasons other than his musical output (and there seem to be quite a few of 'em) are, quite simply, deeply, deeply misinformed. john lee hooker, muddy waters and bob dylan were fans... he had cred and he had genius and he was no more of a ripoff than any other soul or blues artist... great mix, rob.
Chalk me up as one of the people who thinks Elvis is underrated. I see him as more of a musical puppet than anything else (didn't write any of his tunes, contrary to what some of the writing credits say), and I don't think his voice (or anything else) was that spectacular...nor would I call him the true King of Rock 'N Roll. I just never "got" Elvis--but I'd be willing to give the early stuff a shot.
Um, I meant overrated.
