Soul jazz was the most popular jazz style in the 1960s and surged again in the 1970s. A danceable rhythmic foundation was paramount in the style that erupted from the roots of bebop, gospel, and blues. On albums by the likes of Grant Green, Jimmy Smith, and Donald Byrd, groove-conscious musicians sunk their teeth deep into the funky rhythms while fierce solos pushed the tracks over the top.
