Comment:

so my mix-making skillz were pretty much used for the benefit of just one girl for the last 3 years. she was my best friend and my girl; now, slowly, we're regaining the best friend part, and that's a very cool thing.

and so i'm making mixes for her again. i've almost always set out to make her just a "sleepytime" or "party time" or "driving time," subtext-free mix, especially in the less-than-happy times. but when i look back at the tracklistings, i realize i was always communicating through pop music, intentionally or subconsciously. happy times, a lot of belle & sebastian, fountains of wayne, secret stars, bob marley. sad times, a lot of wedding present, otis redding, nick drake, bob dylan. angry times-- you get the idea.

i made her a mix right before i knew she was breaking up with me/ cheating on me/ etc. i suspected, and it was a very pretty, down-time, and exceedingly barbed mix. ended with elvis costello's "baby plays around," nina simone's "don't explain," elliott smith's "i didn't understand," and keith jarret's "i'm through with love". i gave it to her *after* it all happened, after much debate. i'm not into being passive-aggressive, but the mix said what i felt.

but now, we're getting on well. i feel pretty ok-- it's been months. i'm still in love with her, but i'm trying to "move on". so i thought i'd make a mix that would express that. some sort of "i'm alive and well, missing you, but not falling apart anymore" mix.

i think maybe it's not quite that.

Wow...great example of how powerful mixtapes can be. I hope your situation turns out for the best.

you've got a great collection of tunes here, especially the zombies, astrud gilberto, strokes, al green, and kings of c picks. ;)

Great! As Nick Drake said: "If songs were lines in the converstaion the situation would be fine"

Yup. Isn't it great how music can say just what you've been meaning to say, but can't?
