The Supremes
Comment:
Soul and pop form a sublime union in the Supremes, the Motown triumvirate of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard, who dominated the charts with no less than a dozen #1 hits from 1964-69. Beginning with their first chart-topper, "Where Did Our Love Go?," and including "Come See About Me" and "Baby Love," three of those singles clocked in at #1 in '64 alone. Such unprecedented star power made the Supremes not only outstandingly successful for a girl group, but also the single most successful African-American group of the '60s.
