To say that traditionalists were shocked at Miles' new direction would be putting it mildly, but two decades had passed between the first [i]Birth of the Cool[/i] sessions and the first [i]Bitches Brew[/i] recordings. In jazz years, that's a lifetime. "Rated X," from 1972's [i]Get Up With It[/i], drops you unapologetically into fusion's deep end, and it takes a little furious paddling to get your bearings, but it's worth it.
