Comment:
I seem to have reached the prog-rock phase of my mix-making as they've certainly become more pompous and bloated. The above is a 3xCDR representation of my favorite book: Bulgakov's "The Master & Margarita", which, literally, took me months to plot and compile. The book itself, aside from being a spiteful, humor laced indictment of Stalin-era Russian life, is also a mirror of Goethe's "Faust" themes of good vs. evil, regeneration, and the transcendence of the human spirit. The 3 discs were meant to both somewhat follow the plot as well as offer metaphorical support to the ongoings. For those familiar with both the book and the tracks, there are a plethora of subtle nuances to be had. Disc 2 actually begins with Side 1, #16. Disc 3 with Side 2, #9. Tracklist/plot notes as follows: Thursday (Disc 1): 1.1-1.3: Berlioz/Bezdomny meet Woland at Patriach's Ponds; Woland predicts Berlioz's death 1.4: Berlioz decapitated by a streetcar 1.5-1.7: Yeshua dines with Judas; Yeshua arrested after making political comment about Caesar 1.8-1.10: Bezdomny meets The Master in the asylum 1.11-1.14: Woland and his gang settles in to Apt. 50 and causes chaos throughout Moscow: Likhodoyev sent to Yalta, Korovyev plants currency, Savelyechi Varenuka becomes a vampire, etc. 1.15: Woland & his gang give performance at The Variety Friday (Disc 2) 1.16-18: Pontius Pilate interrogates Yeshua, sentences him to death 1.19: Yeshua is crucified 1.20-1.21: After Yeshua's death, storm descends on Yershalaim 1.22-1.23: Margarita re-reads remnants of Master's manuscript 1.24: Margarita goes to park to meet Azazello 1.25-1.26: Margarita becomes a witch, destroys critic's apartment and flies off to meet Woland 2.1-2.8: Satan's ball takes place with Margarita as hostess Saturday (Disc 3):2.9-2.11: Woland grants Margarita a wsih: to be reunited with The Master 2.12-2.13: Judas is murdered 2.14-2.16: Shootout in Apt. 50, building burns, Woland's gang peform pranks that leave parts of Moscow burning 2.17-2.20: Levi Matvei comes to Woland with request from Yeshua: give the Master peace; Azazello gives poisoned wine to The Master and Margarita and their bodies die 2.21-2.25: Master is allowed to set Pilate free from his insomnia; Master and Margarita are given a little cottage in which to spend eternity. Also, a note on the packaging: 3 jewel case bases glued to plywood, and connected by ribbon to make a Jacob's Ladder (har har), which then fold into a wooden slipcase. Color me an obsessive geek.
Feedback:
This is a work of art.
my God ! This should be the next Mix-of-the-Week (if the azzhole who picks them would get off his lazy, slothful butt-ski and pick another) he must think it's Mix-of-the-Month.
funny...i didn't get this sort of clarity when *i* read the master and margarita...amazing.
HOLY SHIT. ambition of scope aside (which is stunning in its own right), this looks utterly amazing. brilliant work. oh yeah, i'm in total agreement with geldon farsk's comment as well.
wow, i second the "holy shit" comment!
ok, yeah, I've tried to do mixes for books before, but I never ended up with anything that I felt would *heighten* the reading of the book. really really beautiful. and I agree with you, the book deserves it.
This is pretty fucking impressive, sir.
This is really cool. I'm sure your IQ is a lot higher than mine.
Okay, this mix is AMAZING. I just read "Master and Margarita" for english class, and I'm making my english teacher look at your mix. Because it is just that cool.
Sweet merciful crap. Now I feel that I couldn't compile a companion piece to Black Crowes: Behind the Music. This is where I want to be in three years' time; by that, I'm referring to both the compiling of an epic mix and the completion and comprehension of a novel that doesn't involves lawyers, the Apocalypse, or a lawyer battling the Apocalypse. I cannot help but congratulate you on your achievement.
wow. i think i might leave it at that. wow.
someone deserves a medal...
Wow, this was quite an undertaking. Well deserved mix of the week.
a moo-mentous agglomeration, geek or no...had Mix-of-the-Week written all over it...beautiful*.* Thanks to Rob, too, for taking over the reins from the previous chooser...who obviously fell asleep @ the wheel.
But where is "Teardrop"? Just kidding. Incredible dedication to the craft and a work of art I could only dream of understanding. How does anyone top this?
The thing I especially like about this mix is... I mean the thing that's really cool about this mix is... I mean... Obviously I've got so many effusive things to say about this that they've all gotten bottled up somewhere in my medulla oblongata (or whatever part of the brain effusion comes from). Worth MOTW for the packaging alone.
truly an inspiration! wow!
Jesus.
Jesus.
Comments are unworthy.....but, please: any cover of your's would be nice, so please show it
damn I can't stop looking at this.....okay, one comment from the unworthy: check out some Dante for a cover and do it Enrst style.....something I always wanted to do but never had the mix for it
Have you seen the recent essay at Salon.com about Sympathy for the Devil? It seems that Jagger was reading the same book.
Damn! Just Damn!
this is the finest thing ever done for love not money.
Holy SHIT! Not only is this the most ambitious thing ever, but it takes from at least 5 of my top 20 CD's. Putting Rite of Spring in the MIDDLE of a mix is just insane! Also mad, mad, mad props for The Birthday Party, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Pogues.
amazing. consider yourself commended by me, as well as, it appears, most of the rest of the AOTM community. i can now unashamadly say that making mixes is an art, and you are a master.
Unbelievably good. Who fancies having a go at 'Ulysses'?
Great...not only have you added more music for me to seek out, but you put another book on my reading list. Will it never end!
interesting, but not my cup of tea. "pompous and bloated" sounds about right. the music doesn't seem to live up to the extensive allegorical qualities assigned them-- it's all pretty standard, if good, mix fare. give me the 'to the lighthouse' or 'as i lay dying' or 'pale fire' of mixes any day.

Oops. Damn cats on keyboards. In any case, I am in awe. This is a work of art. You, good sir, are a master of the mix tape and an inspiration. I know have a project, to put my favourite novel into a mixtape. Thank you.
My 2 cents... amazing. Now can we ALL get copies?
Poor Bulgakov is spinning in his grave while his young american readers are enjoying his novel to the accompaniment of Metallica and Tricky. This mix does as much justice to the atmosphere of Moscow in the 30's as Disney's Anastasia to the story of the Russian royalty.
Dear God.
This is the best mix i've ever seen.
This is the best mix i've ever seen.
I love that book!
An excellent and inspired mix!
An excellent and inspired mix!
This truely is a project that wins out on sheer scope an ambition. I am unfmailiar with the book, but the bredth of music you have put on this mix is absolutley amazing. A masterpiece of theme and flow.
I've forgotten to update my comments since I read the book, Jeff. Here goes: this mix is even better/more amazing now. Astoundingly great work.
This is truly glorious. But one thing -- I always thought that the proper accompianment to Berlioz's decapitation would be The March To the Scaffold from the Symphonie Fantastique -- the last three notes, when the head goes bump, bump, plop... ah well. I can't fault you for anything else. It's lovely.
Amazing mix - most impressive, sir. In the spirit of the reviewer who mentioned Jagger - may I also reference Pearl Jam's (yes, I hear the gasps ...) Pilate, off Binaural, which also references the book. Shocking effort, brilliant result. Good luck with whatever follows.
Disney didn't make anastasia.
I think this is an example of the ultimate mix work. It's perfect in every way ! Every musical style is represented, linked to the others by a fascinating story from russian classical literature. I especially love the whole second part (!) of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring - though I personnaly prefer the first part, with the presence on the same mix of Sun Ra, Jelly Roll Morton and one of my favourites on the first Pink Floyd album, Chapter 24 !!! Congratulations !
