Comment:

The granola-laden soft rock of the '70s gave way to a more processed sound in the '80s, as synths and drum machines were added (literally) to the mix. Movies played a key role in defining the '80s adult contemporary landscape, with Bette Midler's "The Rose" and the Diana Ross/Lionel Richie duet "Endless Love" leading the way. And Burt Bacharach & Carole Bayer Sager's "That's What Friends Are For," recorded by Dionne Warwick and an all-star cast, not only topped the charts; it also raised millions of dollars for research into the then-recently discovered disease AIDS.
