Anita O'Day
Comment:
Jazz legend Anita O'Day came of age as a big-band vocalist, but she made her mark by stepping out of the sweetheart-songbird routine to swing with the guys, trading hot licks with trumpeter Roy Eldridge and drummer/bandleader Gene Krupa on the freewheeling hep-cat breakthrough "Let Me Off Uptown!" Later, O'Day staked her claim to solo greatness, recording Anita, the Verve label's first-ever LP (featuring her take on "Honeysuckle Rose") and wielding her edge-of-your-seat improv powers to scat double-time through "Them There Eyes," as fellow jazz titan Oscar Peterson gives chase on the 88s.
