Comment:

I promised to do this for lo-fi sometime last summer and finally got around to it... As I listened, I discovered how much I love early Luckies stuff (fresh, kinetic, and heartbreakingly honest) but also discovered how disillusioned I am with their recent output (slightly over-produced "adult alternative" stuff, aside from the absolutely classic "Self-Preservation" and the near-classic "Pin Cushion"). With that in mind, I decided to sell everything from "A Good Kind of Nervous" to the present, with the exception of "Happy Secret".

i was actually going to ask you if you'd done a luckies mix...i've thought about it but never really got into single artist mixes. glad to see lots of stuff off their first album...probably my favourite mainly because of the memories attatched to it. very nice work!!!

Wow, great mix, Rob. Although, of course I disagree with your feelings on their most recent output, but that's just me. And hopefully the person who does buy your discs finds a new favorite band.

hmmm...i agree and disagree with rob. i think that their peak was "a good kind of nervous" and for some reason i've become slightly disillusioned with the last record. but some of their recent stuff (myopic friends and friendless summer among others) is brilliant. i can't wait until their next singles comp is out in march!

I've got to say that I don't like "A Good Kind of Nervous" much at all, Brandt... nothing against you (or Sue, for that matter, with regard to my criticism of their later output). I think their peak was one album earlier, with "What Bird is That?" I want to stress, though, how much I absolutely *love* "Bird", "Green Bicycle Case", "Boondoggle" and about half of "First Tape"--those are truly great and will always have a place in my musical heart. :-)

Fantastic. An argument over when an obscure Austrailian pop band hit their rock'n'roll zenith and whether or not they went the way of Sting, yet still remain pretty much unknown. This is where the music geek gloves come off.;)Anyhow, I only have heard (and own) Happy Secret and find it slightly better than "pretty good". Kind of like a twee Violent Femmes, to make an overly simple comparison. Did anyone hear the interview with them on NPR's Morning Edition a few months ago??

I don't think anything below constitutes an "argument", Jake... and I'm sure Brandt and Sue aren't taking it as such. I agree with your assessment of Happy Secret, for the most part, although I might go as far as calling it a solid "good".

ooooh....i think happy secret is great...the only song i don't absolutely adore on that comp is "edward sandwich hand" and i adore untidy towns...then again, that's the song that hooked me. plus i can't say a bad thing about those guys...they let me hang out with them and mark monnone bought me a shot...so i'm obviously biased :)

Just having fun with imagery, Rob!! :) Question: As far as I've seen, there are only two CD's available for the band, Happy Secret and a newer one. Is the older stuff vinyl only??

Nah, it's all available as Australian imports from Candle Records.

While I didn't get drinks bought for me by the band, they all signed my cd and tali even drew me a picture when I saw them last year!

This is my favorite of your single artist compilations... a narrow victory over "would you be an outlaw for my love" and your velvet underground series. Brilliant.
