Ruth Brown
Comment:
From her first hit, 1949's blazing torch song "So Long," Ruth Brown wielded a combination of fierce soul grit, earthy sensuality, and feminine passion to send single after single onto the R&B chart. With '50s hits, like the rhythm & blues heat-seeker "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" and the swingin' stroller "5-10-15 Hours," Brown became a one-woman intersection between jazz, blues, R&B, and rock. In the process, she helped put her label, the infant Atlantic Records, on the map.
