Comment:

For those not in the know about BC politics, Gordon Campbell is the malicious asshole that the shallow, badly uninformed (primarily because there was precious little information to be had) populace of this province elected as "Premier" last year by a ridiculous majority (77 seats to 2, both in my neighborhood). While you can imagine by what I've said so far that I did not vote for him, I also never envisioned that he would take his loathsome politics to the extreme that he has lately. This last weekend, after having, in the past, declared Education an essential service (thus severely limiting teachers' right to strike) and imposed a freeze on educational funding (after magnanimously offering the populace a tax cut that naturally benefited the rich far more than the poor), Campbell legislated a contract on the teachers of this province that can only be described, favourably, as fascistic. Not only did he do that, but he also decided, just for the hell of it, to nullify all union contracts with government. These were contracts that, unlike the teachers', had already been negociated and settled by the respective unions and their employers (example: college teahers and their employers association). Why? I can only imagine it is a personal vendetta that has nothing to do with his elected duty to provide the populace with good government. That and a lifelong problem with impotence, I would venture (in this situation I believe an ad hominem attack like that is perfectly justified). Even after all this, he still claims to be acting in the interest of the children (something he maintains the teachers are not doing). How can a government that freezes spending on education even begin to consider making a statement like that? Further misdeeds: Legislating Bus Drivers back to work, cutting welfare drastically, massive government layoffs, cuts to pharmacare for the elderly and, most ridiculous of all, the cancellation of subsidized bus passes for the elderly (pettiness in excelsis). Right now I am beyond being ashamed to be a British Columbian. I have never felt such a deep sense of political outrage and above all I feel deeply hurt. I believe very strongly in a government's responsibility to create a good society. A good society does it's best to ensure the wellbeing and empowerment of those who may otherwise fall through the cracks (traditionally the elderly, the young and the poor, NOT the leaders of the business community). A good society does not go out of its way to insult those who dedicate themselves (for comparatively little reward) to realizing this vision. Yesterday the teachers held a province wide walkout. I went and joined them in support, and also because it was supposed to be the first day of my student-teaching practicum. When I got home from the rally I was in a pretty militant mood and this is what came out. Now I can only hope that some serious civil disobedience results from what Campbell has done. There doesn't seem to be any other recourse now.

P.S. - Sorry for the length of my commentary. I'm not a very concise person at the best of times (ask anyone who's read my zine), and violent outrage tends to exacerbate that.

I think this is a great mix and you should send it to Campbell. I'm also from BC and I'm still trying to figure out what the hell the Liberal party is thinking with these policies and cut backs. I'm only 20 so politics is still farely new to me but I'm trying to stay as informed as possible. I agree with you when you say that the public is uninformed about their candidates, Stockwell Day was actually won in my area. As for myself, I voted for the Green Party in the last election and I will probably continue to do so since I can't see myself voting for any other political party in BC.

Being in Burnaby myself I can appreciate your feelings...of course though after the whole NDP fiasco we didn't have much option, did we? All politicians are liars...bottom line.

As always, a great mix, Randy. You never fail to knock me out. Sorry to hear that things aren't running so smoothly in your neck of the woods. And in a less direct way, I can sympathize: we didn't even elect "The Gentleman's W." as President in the popular vote and he's running our country.

great mix and kudos for doing your part to speak out against hypocrisy and short-sighted policies. it's particularly shameful that teachers are treated with such little respect in the north americas (u.s. and canada both).

what you need to do is to get Don Cherry to whoop that guy's ass! educators are always horribly abused and underappreciated--it's the reason i stopped being one. makes me wonder why my brother WANTS to be one too...[fantastic mix by the way, as usual.]

Glad to see you active and engaged over the politics of your contry. Wish more were as engaged instead of being spoon fed information designed to keep them from asking questions. Don Cherry the jazz great whoopin'ass? Some of his music does that effect if you ask me. Somehow, I think you are talkin hockey.

Thanks for the comments. Now I'm entertaining the rather pleasant vision of Don Cherry trying to hack Campbell's head off with a semi-blunt hockey stick while Don Cherry plays Ornette's "Free Jazz" directly into Campbell's left ear on his pocket trumpet. Hee hee hee. I should mention that, while this mix was specifically inspired by Campbell, it's also meant to be a general invocation of militant political rage, so please feel free to rename it after your favorite local potentate (i.e - Behead George W. [or Junior, as I like to call him]). And Geoff, I have to disagree with your assertion that the NDP's actions gave us no other choice. In fact that line of thinking is exactly what I was referring to when I said that the electorate was shallow and badly uninformed. Most voters, from what I could gather, made their decision based solely on that piece of information. They didn't stop for a second to consider what Campbell was saying and what he might do. I did, and I realized pretty quickly that he would almost certainly be infinitely worse than the NDP. Consequently, to my mind, the only party I couldn't vote for was the Liberals, because I actually disagreed most strongly with their platform (not that they really had a clearly stated platform, they knew they didn't need one, which is another reason I trusted them the least). Anyway, the point I'm making is, democracy doesn't work particularly well when people choose only to react within it, and never to act. I agree with your final statement though, I think the only natural position to adopt towards politicians is one of extreme distrust, whether they're on your side of the political fence or not.

David. I figured we'd bump into each other 'round these parts eventually. Adult Survivor of Sam's. Is that intentionally supposed to be ASS acronymically? Tee hee. At least we got out while the getting was comparatively good.
