Comment:
There can be only one greatest band in rock and roll. And that band is the Kinks. The Stones, the Beatles, The Who.... all very fine, but the Kinks made everlasting art. These songs are from my favorite period in their history. I don't think any band has had as long a streak of flawless albums - mind you, this is an endless debate between Rob C. and me. He's a big Beatles fan, you see. The Beatles can kiss my hairy yellow butt. For the uninitiated, run (don't walk) to your nearest quality record store and buy: Muswell Hillbillies, Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, Face to Face, Something Else,..... I could go on and on. I love this band. Comp dedicated to Katherine Lally, 'cuz she's so swell. God Save the Kinks.Feedback:
Nice comp, Sean. The Kinks must be pretty great.
where is "hatred (a duet)"?
Nice one.
kinky mix...very nice
Cool mix, Sean, despite the fact that the Kinks are the *fourth* best band of all-time. ;-) I'd never argue that the Kinks made "everlasting art"--it's just not as everlasting as the Beatles' (I mean, I understand that Think Visual and Phobia are currently being used at universities worldwide to define the term, but I find those academic snobs a bit dubious). ;-) And I certainly can't aruge with any of your picks, although you left off two of my three favorite Kinks songs ("Do You Remember Walter" and "Days").
You sure like to pick fights, Rob. Yes, I know you're being facetious (or is it fecetious?), and I know as well as anyone that the later Kinks releases pale in comparison to the 60s and early 70s period. Still, the Kinks came back with many good singles and albums after that period - "Give the People What they want" is great. As far as the 'everlasting' comment goes, I know that the Beatles made equally everlasting art. I was just baiting you, ya goof. However, the post-Beatles output is woefully spotty (at best). After '76 or so, I lose interest entirely (aside from Lennon, but you'll no doubt take me to task on that as well).
Truly, who is capable of sustaining such a period of brilliance? I can't really think of anyone who has made an endless string of records I'd love to hear. That the Kinks made records I still love to hear over 3 decades later is testament to their artistic contribution. The Beatles are great - I just find them a tad more dated than you do. Also, I left off many of my favorite Kinks songs, as well as some obvious choices - these are the ones I really love hearing over and over. Probably should have included "Walter", though.
Fourth best, my ass.... What, are you putting Journey ahead of them?

No, I'm putting the Beatles, Stones (although all Stones albums after "Tattoo You" suck as much as later Kinks, as do "Black and Blue" and most of "Emotional Rescue"), and Beach Boys (we're talking pre-Jon Stamos)ahead of them. :-) I'd even think about ranking Big Star ahead of them. And I was *clearly* being facetious, Mr. Lally, and I understood you were baiting me... but once baited, I thought I'd share my thoughts with the group. heh heh I know I certainly don't agree with your assessment of "Give the People...", though--I think it's fine, but not even remotely great (haven't we bantered about this a million times in person?). The Beatles are "dated"? *simply chuckles and shakes his head* Oh yeah, that Double Fantasy certainly is *classic*. LOL LOL LOL I love overproduced pap. Anyway, dude, let me know what you're up to this evening...
The good thing about opinions is that we all have them. I have mine, and you have yours - which is, of course, the wrong opinion. Big Star, ahead of the Kinks? You sad, sorry little boy.
you know, i think in their later lives, the kinks were merely mediocre, while the stones and beach boys were awful. and i can not meet the challenge of stating someone who has put out 30 years + of good records. i would say Lou Reed, except he decided to release records during the 90s as well...
Lou Reed....... hmmmm. That's certainly worth considering. Actually, maybe Neil Young too, though he has his share of dross.
I definitely don't back you up on the Lou Reed thing, Brandt, as I think he's made about five good solo records (scattered throughout his career)... but hey, as Sean said (and I thought I clearly implied), all of us have opinions... I can't help it if you're delusional, Sean. ;-) And notice that I did not definitively put Big Star ahead of the Kinks; it's merely under consideration.
Lou Reed.......... I think he's frequently overlooked, mainly because the VU stuff is so much better. Still I can think of many great Lou records - Growing up in public, transformer, new sensations, legendary hearts, new york, blue mask.... I won't get behind the 90s stuff, but he's pretty solid up to there. Hell, even Metal Machine Music has its charm.
I'll go with Transformer, Coney Island Baby, The Blue Mask, and Legendary Hearts as "great".
oooh...i forgot about Neil. bob dylan, of course, hasn't been good since the 70s...like i said...it's a challenge to think of anybody that fits the bill. and yes rob, we all have our opinions...i'll back you on the beatles, but i think VU is WAY better than Big Star...
I'll go with the Zombies over Big Star too.
totally Sean :) and i'll drop the name of the Pixies while were at it, although i know the sort of indignation that will get me...
The Pixies?! I mean, I really, really like the Pixies, don't get me wrong... but they're not even in the same *league* as any of the bands we've been name-checking here, IMHO.
Oh, and the Zombies have too many lame r 'n' b covers on that first album (and keep in mind they have all of two albums) to vault them over Big Star, but they're at least in my Top 20. This is not to take away from "Odessey" or the singles...
you're right Rob...those other bands are MINOR leaguers compared to the Pixies ;)
lol Right, Brandt. I now see the error of my ways. Colin Blunstone certainly pales in comparison to the vocal genius of Black Francis. ;-)
I love The Kinks! I put them above The Who, The Stones and right up there with The Beatles (I'll admit I listen to The Kinks more than I do The Fab Four, simply because I have been oversaturated with The Beatles all my life so it's not a disrespect).Compare all the above mentioned bands along side The Kinks in respective time period and it seems '76 on, you got some spotty output there (Ray and company included). Yes go buy all the albums mentioned by Sean NOW!
As for The Zombies. I like The Small Faces better but I not slagging The Zombies when I say that.
As for Big Star, I like 'em alot, but give I'd rank Badfinger and The Raspberries up there too.(Had Peter Buck and Paul Westerberg only name-checked Peter Ham instead of Chilton back in the 80's, band icon status history would have been re-written).

I like the Small Faces better than the Zombies, as well, Tom, but definitely prefer Big Star way over the Raspberries and slightly over Badfinger. And yeah, Pete Ham definitely needs more PR--he was absolutely amazing.
Wow, this Kinks mix turned into a music discussion forum with out the usual childish comments of this band sucks with no merit. Might have to set up a Yahoo music geek discussion group as not to detract from these mixes.
Raspberries over Big Star, what was I thinking? I mean I like 'em and all but in the big picture...I was in one of the debating moods. Will stop now and go plop down and listen the Kinks BBC sessions to steer my mind right.
Yeah, Tom, I agree that it's a rarity around here. I'd be more than willing to participate in such a group, however, if you wanted to set it up. :-) I think the difference here is that the four of us who are participating in this discussion all know and like each other, as well as gravitate toward generally (and yes, I know there are differences) similar music...
I am waiting for the much anticipated Freddie and The Dreamers mix.
Oh, it's coming, jerk. It's got 80 minutes of "I'm Telling You Now" on it... complete with tracking sessions! :-D
Poor Sean. Whenever he submits a mix, he either gets a fist fight or a music discussion forum. Nice mix BTW, but no one will ever top BTO in my opinion.
Nice one Sean. One man's Billy Lee Riley is another's Billy Ray Cyrus.
i've NEVER been brave enough to say i like the kinks more than the beatles here, or anywhere else for that matter. i love 'em. they're so damn fun!! excellent selections.
Great job--people think I'm crazy, but I've always thought the Kinks (and the Byrds) were much better than the Beatles or the Stones. I'm glad you've included "God's Children" as it has become my favorite Kinks song.
Yeah, life is so complicated ;-)
At least Ray Davies never wore full-length leopard print coats (keith richards), or had a mullet-extension (lou reed)!!
Looks like I'm at least a week late in commenting. Darn it, I'm going to comment anyway. I love the Kinks sooo very much, and this is a great selection of songs. Kinkos! (No, I mean "kudos"; Kinkos is a copy place...)
Anyone who loves the Kinks this much is my kinda guy! Great job, EXCELLENT choices.
Hey sean..Gerard's slathering all over this in his e-mails to me....any chance of obtaining one? With the estimable Katherine's permission of course! Lemme' know.
The Kinks were good :)
sir, since you don't post much new stuff and you are by far the greatest mixer on here, despite your conservative politics and love of the dope culture, I thought I'd go back thru and look at some of your older things. imagine my surprise when I seen a mix by the kinks - one of history's worst bands. I'll tell you one thing - I'm not one of those people who thinks Page played on there records - who ever heard Jim Page play like such crap. B - Page wasn't into the alcohol seen that your precious Kinks were. "Let's write a song about drinking and then throw cymbals at each other." that's a great lesson for the boy scouts - speaking of which: How many boy scouts does it take to build a canoe? I don't know, they oughta just buy it at Wal-Mart. Don't believe the hype- junkfood kills.
You were right about very little overlap :) but you made me realize I forgot one or two - especially Everybody's Gonna Be Happy - can't believe I left that one off. I've never liked Waterloo Sunset though.. ;) different strokes. Kickin, and keep up the great work.
Something Better Beginning is one of Ray's finest songs - lovely to see it on your mix. How about '20th Century Man' too? What a beaut!
