Comment:

After years spent learning Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters licks note for note, a new generation — Clapton, Beck, Allman, Butterfield, and more — extracted the blues not out of their voices, but from their guitars. They bent notes like sharecroppers’ backs and lashed strings to make their amps scream and cry. The guitarist as superhero was born right here, emerging from the keening wail of Jimi’s Stratocaster in “Hey Joe” and Duane Allman’s Gibson Les Paul, hollering from the depths of hell in “Whipping Post.” And just when you thought it couldn’t get any heavier, ex-Yardbird Jimmy Page launched Led Zeppelin, opening the skies for some heavy metal thunder.
