Comment:
80 minutes of Phil Ochs, yet another in a series of criminally misunderstood 60's artists. Compiled by request of Sean Lally, with all due credit to CASETTA, whose single-artist mix last year motivated me to actually buy a Phil album ("Tape from California") after nearly 20 years of reading about him in rock encyclopedias and listening to ace covers of his tunes (most notably Squirrel Bait's unbelievable take on "Tape from California" and Teenage Fanclub's spirited b-side run through "Chords of Fame"). As a ton of Phil's songs are lengthy, there was not nearly enough room to include all I'd like. The most notable omissions (to me) are "I've Had Her", "There But for Fortune", "Another Age", "Floods of Florence", "The Harder They Fall", "White Boots Marching in a Yellow Land", "The Highwayman", "No More Songs", "The Crucifixion", "The Party" and "One More Parade". God save Phil Ochs. (Thought I'd toss that one in there for you, Sean.)Feedback:
Glad I helped guide you to get a Phil Ochs album.
So am I, Tom. Thanks again. :-)
Friend of mine and I love Phil Ochs--decided if we ever get called up, we're gonna simply play Draft Dodger Rag at our evals.
he really is tragically misunderstood, though i guess that it is because he is rather conserative for the era..but he is damn fine songwriter.
A great, great artist and a nice selection of his work.
songs that should be learned in every classroom across america. or something. great work, rob.
Great mix, Rob. I really need to buy some of his stuff, maybe I'll look out for the "tape for california" one.
Makes me want to write a whole bunch of protest songs. How about, "I'm ain't drivin' the Pittsburgh commute any more!" Seems kinda trivial, I guess. Gotta hear this one, Robbie.
Well, I guess I know what will be included in my next purchase from Amazon. Thanks for the recommendation!!
I bought "Pleasures Of The Harbor" based upon this mix--I'd never listened to Phil Ochs's music before. The record hasn't left my stereo for several days now. I'll have to get his back catalogue now. Thanks, in an indirect sort of way.
