Natalie Portman was right: Pop music can save lives, even when that pop music is as quirky and quaint as that of the Shins. Case in point: the underdog uprising of their latest album, [i]Wincing the Night Away[/i], which cracked the charts like a windshield in its first week. Not because of hype or a hit single, either, but because of years spent crafting understatedly gorgeous songs. We're talking perfectionist pop that's lighter than a balloon and catchier than a cold in December, including spacey synth-pop ballads ("Sleeping Lessons"), simple love songs that might as well be strummed with heartstrings ("New Slang," "Pink Bullets"), and summer jams that beg for a drive down an open, balmy road at midnight ("Australia," "So Says I"). That's right — throw those kitchen windows open and crank these cuts up. Everything's about to get a whole lot better.
