Anyone who thinks of women as “the weaker sex” clearly hasn’t been paying attention to pop music for the last, oh, few decades. From soul to country to alt-rock — and just about everything in between — women just like the Dixie Chicks have been quite casually asserting their independence and strength in song, not as a distant goal, but as a proven fact. In effect, these songs declare that not only has the playing field been leveled, but any participant who tries to run the game under the old rules will get leveled too.
