Comment:

A child's first introduction to surf music, mixing old and new classics alike. Y'know, you can never have enough surf music in your collection. Rather than recommending old stuff, I always suggest that surf newbies start with Los Straitjackets - probably the greatest surf band of all time. A couple of covers were included where the originals were not available or (in the case of Ben Vaughn), I liked those versions more. Dedicated to Joe Meek.

Ah yes, Sean and his surf. You know my take on this stuff (based upon my somewhat limited knowledge)... but, also based upon this knowledge, this disc looks kuhl, duude.

By the way, I just read your dedication... not only is it apt, but it's totally hilarious (or is it the other way around?).

Ah, the great Joe Meek. There's never been a nicer guy to kill his landlady. Well, maybe Phil Spector - no wait, he killed Ronnie Spector. Almost....

Sean, you're killing me! I'd love to hear this one too...what can I offer you in return?

How do you feel about Man or Astroman?

That Man or Astroman question was actually not related to my first question, since I don't have any of their stuff, though I've heard a lot of it. Just to clarify (i *am* in law school, after all :^P)

You may be the first man ever killed by surf. Needless to say, I love MoA? One of the best shows I've ever seen, though in their full-blown glory they can be a bit, uh, overstimulating. That is, a show can be exhausting. Also, they have a lot of releases, and as such, they can be a bit samey. Just a bit, though. I love them for what they are. A copy is yours. Drop me some e-mail.

The first MoA? cd is a classic. Other discs have their moments of brilliance.

sounds like a great mix - may I suggest the Bomboras ? A killer surf band that broke up a couple years ago. Also, former Milwaukee band the Exotics. R.I.P.

Ah, the Bomboras....... My surf band, Don Capicola, played our first show with them. (Yes, in a fit of egoism, I put one of our tunes on this comp.) The Bomboras rocked me like a hurricane! I never saw a guy beat the hell out of a Farfisa like their organ player did. Sadly, I don't have anything of theirs. I only have an Exotics track on a comp. Any recommendations?

Ben Vaughn's Link Wray cover of Cross Ties is mighty swell. Tough call to say which I like better. Now his Crossfires cover is a great cover of a band that would later become The Turtles.

the only exotics album released was called "Global a Go Go". it's probably hard to find now. but then that's the fun of collecting music, isn't it ?
