Comment:

As anyone who heard him spin in the ’80s will tell you, Dr. Dre got his start digging through record crates and distilling his choicest influences into some of the finest DJ sets the West Coast has ever witnessed, both in clubs and on legendary L.A. hip-hop radio station KDAY. Aside from the "hit me!" break-dance beat of a James Brown drum break or shell-top/tracksuit shot of East Coast rap (Run-DMC, Boogie Down Productions), his mixes were often more manic than a psych ward, mining the freshest sounds from the chilly German electro of Kraftwerk (and the Kraftwerk-sampled “Planet Rock”), the pimp-stick strut of "Dolemite," and the space-cadet funk of Parliament, among hundreds of other select grooves.
