Let’s face it: [i]No one[/i] but Dr. Dre can nail his synth-swilling, liver-than-James-Brown-in-the-late-’60s sound, but some producers and microphone fiends have come close. Former partner-in-rhyme Ice Cube takes the gangsta-rap throne on the tremor-triggering "Bow Down," Mack 10 is as malicious as a machete atop the abrupt buzz tones of "W/S Foe Life," and 2Pac steps to the fore of Death Row in its final days with the Dre-indebted saloon squabble "Ambitionz Az a Ridah." And that's exactly what happens when you've raised the bar from the beginning: Subconsciously or not, the rest of the rap game follows, bringing their own spin to a sound that grabbed an entire nation by the ear.
