In 1956, Elvis assumed his throne to the tune of five chart-topping smashes, four of which we've included right here: "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," "Heartbreak Hotel," and "Love Me Tender." Meanwhile, a whole lot of other hot, young acts were having field days of their own. While 13-year-old Frankie Lymon was making his claim to rock 'n' roll immortality with "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," bona-fide rockabilly rebel Gene Vincent was applying some pomade and primal lovin' to the charts with "Be-Bop-a-Lula." At the other end of the spectrum, the Platters ("My Prayer") and the Clovers ("Devil or Angel") were keeping the airwaves soft and shimmering. The year in music continues in our Next Steps . . .
