1959
Comment:
By 1959, the sound that galvanized Teenage America (while scaring the bejeezus out of Mom & Pop America) was at a crossroads. The Brill Building was happening, the Beatles were on the horizon, and the rock 'n' roll revolution was almost over. Almost. Truth is, it still had a few hell-raisers in the can: Before he departed for good, Ritchie Valens left us to tangle with a bit of a rattlesnake ("La Bamba"); with "What'd I Say, Pt. 1" Brother Ray brought to mainstream America the fever of a juke joint Saturday night; and the Isleys dropped "Shout (Parts 1 and 2)," in the process igniting dance floors for half-a-century. And that's just for starters — 1959-in-music continues in our Next Steps.
