So shoot me--I think the Monkees had a slew of classic pop songs in the '60s. Mike Nesmith was an absolute songwriting genius. Unfortunately, none of them had a great voice, and Davy Jones' voice was an unforgivable offense (in most cases)... plus they were saddled with TV-show-sounding record production... *sigh*. All in all, a shame for them. There were a ton of songs that I had to leave out because of space: "I Can't Get Her Off My Mind", "Forget That Girl", "Some of Shelly's Blues", "Can You Dig It", "Papa Gene's Blues", "Words", "Of You", "Carlisle Wheeling", "She", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "I'm a Believer", "When Love Comes Knockin' (At Your Door)", "Valleri", "While I Cry", "Salesman"... the list goes on. Inspired primarily by borrowing the 4-disc box from Sean (and adding it to the four CDs that I already had) and listening to Eric Schmuckler's fine "Monkeemania" comp.Feedback:
Nice tribute Rob. To be honest, I'm not familiar with too much of this, but "Porpoise Song" is one of my all-time favorite songs ever. I'm surprised the Stone Roses never covered it, since that song so closely matched their sound.

Looks nice. I've recently been listening to some of the stuff Mike Nesmith did after leaving the Monkees, and now I need to go back and listen to some of the Monkees again.
i used to love cable re-runs of their old tv show when i was a kid, but was always a bit skeptical of the music itself. know why? cuz i was ignorant! and i still am!! how can you not like them just a little bit, though, even if you're a bit embarrassed to admit it? another fine mix, rob.
Oh yay for this! The Monkees was my favourite tv show as a kid, and I still get all smiley when I listen to 'em. Whee.

Hey, this *is* a good comp. I guess I assumed that you'd leave off some of the period hippy songs (like "For Pete's Sake"). But then, you like dated stuff, right? Like "Sgt. Pepper"? I kid, I kid..... I love just about every song on this list. "Porpoise song" and "All of your toys" are faves. Like many other 30-somethings, I grew up with the Monkees in one way or another. I didn't have the contempt for Davy Jones I now feel - I genuinely liked seeing him on the Brady Bunch!
By the by, the version of "Stepping Stone" by the Flies steamrollers over the Monkees version. They weren't evil enough to pull it off.
I couldn't agree more-- in fact I saw them perform 3 times in the 1980s. The first time was an obligatory "greatest hits" show, but the second year was dedicated to die-hard fans who knew all the words to every song on every album (with the exception, of course, of the awful "Changes" album with only Mickey and Davy--ugh. It was a chance for them to show that they did indeed know how to "play their instruments" regardless of their less-than-auspicious beginnings as a "made for TV" phenomenon. Like you said, Mike was an awesome songwriter and Peter was a competent guitarist (if not vocalist). I spent a large portion of my early 20s defending this band to the uninitiated. This is a great mix, a lot of my favorites are here. Yep, I guess you'd better add this one to the pile too. =)

I was a huge Monkees fan in junior high and so I agree that they are a bit of a guilty pleasure...and I also agree that Mike was vastly underrated as a songwriter. He was always my favorite Monkee. I've been toying around with the idea of making a "Monkee Mike" compilation lately. Pretty good choices here, but I'd include some weirder stuff--like maybe "Writing Wrongs"--and less hits. I'd also include more from "Instant Replay" and "Birds, Bees..."
Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure what you mean by "less hits" as only three of these songs ("Clarksville", "Take a Giant Step" and "Stepping Stone") were hit singles. I merely included my favorite songs here... I wasn't looking for "weird" necessarily, especially as (to me, anyway) a lot of their "weird" stuff is dated and irrelevant. And I definitely don't share your fondness for either "Birds, Bees" and "Instant Replay". But hey, to each his/her own.
By hits I meant songs that you tend to find on most Monkees "best-ofs"..."Clarksville," "Giant Step," "Stepping Stone," "Mary Mary," "Girl I Knew Somewhere," "Pete's Sake, "Randy," "Porpoise Song," "Listen To The Band," et. al. BTW: we again are proving to be polar opposites, as "Birds" is probably my favorite Monkees album.
Well, "Girl I Knew", "Porpoise Song" and "Randy", for instance, are three of their best songs that I can think of. "Girl" is actually my favorite of them all. I like classic pop, not dated Davy Jones doodling. ;-)
No argument here...I love all three of those. Davy's stuff is the one sour point of "Birds," I'll admit. Especially "We Were Made For Each Other." But all of Mike's stuff on that record more than makes up for it, IMHO.
Question: did you use the studio version of "Circle Sky" or the live one?
Studio. I prefer that, despite the band's preference for the live one.
That's refreshing...I actually like the studio version a lot too. BTW: is that the early version of "I'll Be Back Upon My Feet"? I assume so.
