Comment:
This mix was compiled as the first part of a two-part series last August and is now posted thanks to the inspiration of Sean Lally's mix "My Stupid Youth". All of these songs remind me of being a kid (in case you can't tell from the selection, Sean's got a few years on me)--for more than the first half, in particular, being stuck in a car seat in the back of my mom's Dodge with the sun beating through the window. The Bo Donaldson song is *THE FIRST* record that I ever purchased (or, more accurately, had my mom purchase for me at the local GeeBee's); I was all of three years old at the time. If this hadn't been pulled pretty much exclusively from my friend Dan's "Have a Nice Day" collection, I'd have included Paul McCartney & Wings' "My Love" and Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", as they are two of my most solid early musical memories. Title from the *very* deep Sammy Johns tune.Feedback:
hi-class all the way. superb Stories pick
These songs bring back alot of memories for me, but they're junior high memories because I'm even more ancient than Sean. The Staple Singers, Gilbert O'Sullivan. David Essex & AWB tracks go back to really specific events in a very impressionable time. Excellent job!
Cool stuff. "Brother Louie" is one of the top 10 greatest songs ever. And a smooth way to end with the Pilot tune.
Good stuff, Rob.
It's not one of my earliest musical memories, but I also have a specific childhood connection to "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" also--hearing it on neighbor's transistor radio while I was playing out in the yard. I have to admit though, the Sammy Johns song makes me shudder--I wrote a story for my website about my all-time most hated songs and "Chevy Van" checked in at # 4 on the list. Family legend has it that "Winchester Cathedral" was the first pop tune I took notice of--I was about a year and a half old when it hit # 1.
This is very cool (as usual); however, I really dislike that Rick Derringer song--even as a little kid I couldn't stand it.
FYI, folks: I don't necessarily "like" all of these songs in a strict sense, which is one of the reasons that I didn't post these mixes for months. They just evoke fond, innocent memories for me and thus the appeal of most of them. I will say, however, that I actually like that Rick Derringer song while acknowledging its cliched qualities, and, well, that Sammy Johns song *is* atrocious, but, well, I like it, despite (or is it because of?) the fact that it is *the* corniest 70's male masturbation fantasty set to music EVER. lol
yea rob. fun earliest musical memories dear...the first song i can ever really recall singing, excluding sesame street and play school picks is probably patsy cline's "i fall to pieces", one of my dad's all time faves...some rather strange picks on this one...but i likes it all the same
Ah, you copycat.... And who are you kidding about the Bo Donaldson being the first record you ever bought - I was sure it was "Blonde on Blonde"...... It was good of you to pick the Melanie track. She's so often maligned (probably due to this song), but she's actually great - at least one billion times better and smarter than Jewel. And pity the poor GeeBees - aren't they out of business? Good thing they has so many good lps in the 60s. I kid....
