Comment:
80 minutes of what is close to being my absolute favorite music (sub-)genre, compiled upon request of fellow AotM'er George Jetson (sorry it took so long). Not many revolutionary picks here, but then again, this is designed as a mod primer for Mr. Jetson. As a result, we went heavy on the "anthemic", and I finished the disc off with what are probably the two most definitive "mod" songs (with the possible exception of "My Generation", of course). We had debated intially about whether to include the authentic '60s soul music that most mods were into, but Sean successfully argued that old-school soul would only clutter up the British vibe that we were going for. I decided to include a couple of more "beat"-oriented tracks ("Boom Boom", "Midnight to Six Man") to give Mr. Jetson an idea of where this music came from, then included a couple of more "psych"-ey tracks ("My Mind's Eye", "I Can Hear the Grass Grow", "Groovy") to provide an inkling of what the music became in short order. (With that in mind, a British '60s psych pop collaboration comp will probably follow sometime in the next couple of months.) Sean also suggested a couple of more stylized pop tunes (Lulu, Unit 4 + 2), which I included with historical perspective in mind. And yes, I understand that not every band here was a favorite of hardcore mods. Here are a few (easy) trivia questions to keep the armchair rock geeks on the site entertained... 1) Who is Davy Jones? 2) What decadent rock legend got his professional start in the Birds? 3) What's the connection between the High Numbers and Les Fleurs de Lys? 4) Who is the backing band on the P. P. Arnold track? 5) What do the P. P. Arnold track and the Chris Farlowe track have in common? 6) Who wrote the Chris Farlowe track? 7) How many songs here (excluding the Chris Farlowe track) are covers and who originally performed them? If you answer all 7, you get a bonus mix for me in our next (or first) trade.Feedback:
What can I say, guys? Absolutely brilliant. I want to be the first to say "I want this". Toss this on my "must own" pile please
I'm honored that I get to be the first to comment on this. Great work guys! Lots of stuff I don't recognize, and a few things I do. I'm sure I won't be the only who wants this classic added to their pile. (BTW Rob, I'm shipping your mixes tomorrow. I know I said that before, but I mean it this time :) !)
Damn! That Scotty Gerald snuck in and submitted something while I was writing my feedback. Okay, so I guess I'll be second in line.
Very fine mix.
Sometimes obviousness = definitivity (say that five times fast). That's just my way of saying revolutionary picks or no, this looks like a pretty fuckin' sweet primer for all things wearing a target t-shirt and a pudding bowl haircut.
big thunmbs up, great stuff
yea!!! very good. but how could a combo of sean and rob go wrong?? i mean seperatly your mixes rock, so it would seem that together the goodness would be multiplyed by two...anyway...yes. easybeats- very fun! love 'em.
A good primer indeed. At least one of you fellows must have the same "Freakbeat Scene" CD that I do :)
Great stuff!
hey Ion, If you're not fast you're last!
yesyesyes sign me up for this as well. the lally/conroy axis is a fearsome thing indeed!

:-) Nice job, sport. I'll accept your answer for #6, although it's technically a Jagger-Richards tune. I only count 5 full-scale covers (although now that I think of it, I could be wrong), but since "I'm the Face" is a Slim Harpo cover in all but name, I'll say you're close enough. We have yet to work out our trade from before, by the way, so feel free to get in touch. And James: Yup, we both have that "Freakbeat Scene" comp.
That's 5 covers *not* counting "Out of Time", as noted in the question.
worthy of a "nuggets" in the title, if you ask me. great mix.
My GOD sir you are probably the single-most obsessive music geek/fan I've encountered and I would give anything to have the kind of collection you must have. How can you possibly afford so much music. I love to speak to someone like you. I live in Erie,Pa and trust me, people don't know diddly squat about music in this city. You're incredible though. I recently found this site and can't believe the community out there who loves this sort of thing. I love all types of music and I'm always searching for more. It makes the world go 'round. I've been skimming through your mixes and I have one question...who (in your opinion of course) is the all-time greatest? I've heard thousands upon thousands of cd's and I always come back to one...Low "I Could Live In Hope." It never ceases to astound and amaze me. It changed how I heard and understood music. Do you have something like that?
My all-time greatest? The answer is pathetically ordinary, but totally honest: the Beatles. And the album that I return to the most? Revolver. Go figure. Thanks for the comments, all of you. I'm sure Sean (who's on vacation 'til tomorrow) will appreciate them, as well.
Hey kids, thanks for the nice comments. It's Sean, returned from a trip to New Orleans - now THERE is a boss town. I've never been anywhere where decadence is celebrated so openly. Saw a great Peter Holsapple set, too. Regarding Eric's comments - as far as fave discs ever go, I tend to go with the Kinks' "Village Green Pres. Society" or Zombies' "Odessey & Oracle". On a different day, it might be Wreckless Eric's "Big Smash", the Byrd's "Younger than Yesterday", Big Star's "Sister Lovers", or the Young Fresh Fellows' "This one's for the ladies". All classics, in their own right. Glad you all liked the Mod mix. Let the trading commence. By the way, Eric - I wonder if we've crossed paths before.... My garage/pop band, the Frampton Brothers, played Erie many times - Norb's, and a whole host of other clubs. Ring a bell?
By the way, Rob - nice addition of extra tracks. You done good, son. Poppa is proud.
oh, goodness. the two of you never cease to amaze. good god i want a copy of this! rob & sean- let me know what you want of mine, if nothing, i'll make you something. i need this. cheers! pam
Great, Rob!
I think I'll choose this one for trading...

How did I miss this??? I LOVE it!!! You two rock! Please consider sending this to me someday, when I've caught up with you a little in trades, okay?
This is an amazing listen. Living in England, I see a lot of Mod comps, but not many come close to this.
Awww, this is fuckin great... I would totally love this...
Just want to post an official thumbs up for your mix. I listen to it in thrall. Nice job.
