Comment:
80 minutes from the band championed more often by 60's obscurists than any other band I can recall. Although they've certainly got their share of classic moments (most of which are on their first two LPs), I am not about to make any absurd claims (like those that I've heard proclaiming that "they're better than the Stones, man") on their behalf. I stopped the disc after their 1970 album "Parachute", as that is when the first of the band's break-ups occurred. Last songs cut: "Talkin' About the Good Times", "Get a Buzz", "Judgement Day", "Walking Through My Dreams" and "She's a Lover".Feedback:
Ah nice, I love the Pretties. They weren't better than the Stones, but S.F. Sorrow is pretty underated in my books. If I had to choose between Sgt. Peppers, Piper, Satanic Majesties Request and S.F. Sorrow, I'd probly opt for S.F. Sorrow.
Looks good Rob. I only have the S.F. Sorrow album, which I really like. Are you familiar with the Electric Banana? Members of the Pretty Things used that psuedonym to record music that ended up being used in low budget films. Some of their stuff was recently released commerially for the first time.
Thanks for the ultra-quick feedback, fellas. Wow, Randy... not sure what to say to that, other than I'd rank them exactly in the order that you listed them, with "S. F. Sorrow" lurking *far* behind the other three (actually, the Stones record would be pretty far behind the first two). But hey, y'know, to each his/her own... And no, Ion, my only familiarity with the Electric Banana was as a now-defunct (but legendary) Pgh rock club and a snippet of a Donovan lyric. :-) Is that stuff any good?
Good stuff. I'm only really familiar with the S.F. Sorrow stuff as well (through mix tapes received)
Good job, Rob - now give me back my damn records! As for S.F. Sorrow's place in the pantheon of concept albums, I might place it ahead of Sgt. Pepper, too. But then, you'd expect that, wouldn't you? I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Pepper is dated and corny :-) Besides, NONE of those records can touch "Village Green Preservation Society", the greatest concept album ever. Maybe the Pretties aren't better than the Stones, but I wonder if their output of the past 20 or so years is better than the Stones' of the same period. I'd bet that it is.
How can you call "Sgt. Pepper" corny and dated while championing "S. F. Sorrow" (which defines those terms in a lot of ways)? As far as "your records" are concerned, only two of the CDs used here--"Emotions" and "Parachute" are yours, and they *were* mine 'til recently. ;-)
One additional thing, though, since the last comment put me in a bad position of attacking a band (and album) that I actually like: the Pretties were best as a garage-punk/R 'n' B band. I even like the proto-prog rock of "Parachute" quite a bit. I just think cod psychedelia was not one of their strong suits, hence my somewhat low ranking of "S. F. Sorrow" and "Emotions" among their 60's output. And incidentally, I like "Village Green" better than any of those records, as well.
A great mix, Rob, once again. I enjoy debates but when it comes to this group is better than that one and what have you, I tend to move aside and watch the sparks fly without actually becoming involved. It's like saying a red car is better than a blue one. It makes for good viewing though!
