Comment:

a mix made a couple of weeks ago for mr. rob conroy, prompted by a comment he made last summer about "catholic block." i originally intended this to be a critical look at organized religion in general, but as there aren't a lot of well-crafted songs challenging hinduism, it ended up focusing on christianity. to my blame or credit (it doesn't matter which), i'm too much of a cultural relativist to pick on one tradition without giving it a chance to speak out in its own defense. tracks 1, 5, 8, 11, 13, and 19 are from volume one of the alan lomax collection, included somewhat for that effect. this plays like a dialogue, or maybe a debate, but it's not at all clear who, if anyone, wins.

I don't know why people don't make more use of the Alan Lomax Southern Journey series. There's some music there that's unlike anything I've ever heard, and it mixes surprisingly well with other kinds of music, country and country-rock in particular, and to a lesser degree some other more atmospheric music.

The Last Words of Copernicus is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. The first time I heard it I honestly thought it was African. It reminded me of the chanted intro to the Peter Gabriel chestnut Biko.

Nice. I have read that Hinduism and Buddhism are more of an ethical and moral system than a religion anyhow. :-)

Ooh...I need that version of "Beulah Land." I have a lot of memories attached to that song--grew up in an old-school Southern Baptist church singing that tune in three-part harmony with my parents. This all looks good, though, actually....Will there be a download at some point? Per favore?<3 Sara
