Catherine Wheel set its goals so high from the start that they turned down record deals from Brian Eno and Alan McGee, the Creation Records don credited for breaking such celebrated British acts as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Oasis. What could have been a grave mistake turned into everyone else's loss as Fontana snagged the band and released its shoegazer start ([i]Ferment[/i], which sounded the way drinking a bottle of cough syrup feels) and shroud-lifting follow-up ([i]Chrome[/i], a pedal-to-the-floor argument against calling Catherine Wheel "just another shoegazer act"). Don't expect to know [i]where that sound's coming from[/i] in our Next Steps either.
