Comment:

Track 29: "Teengenerate" (once again, this program will not allow me a full 30 songs when I revise a mix). I think these guys define the "underrated/overlooked" mantra that I use a lot on these single-artist mixes. It's a shame that Scott McCaughey, the poet laureate of this fine band, is best known as an R.E.M. sideman, and that Kurt Bloch, guitar wunderkind and an ace songwriter in his own right, only receives limited recognition for his recently disbanded *other* project, the Fastbacks (look for a companion comp in the next week or two).

This is great, Rob!
I have to say I liked the other guitar player, Chuck, much better. Is some of this stuff from "The Break-up" Box set?

Really? Chuck Carroll, huh? I dunno... I like a lot of the band's music from that period more, but think Kurt's a way cooler guitar player... not that there's anything wrong with Chuck. "The Break-up" box? What do you mean? :-( I just talked to Scott the other day and he said nothing about a "break-up" or a box...

I've got a box set of singles with a drawing by Tad on the cover & it's JOKING-LY called "The Break-up Box". It came out about '93/'94 or so?
...I think Chuck is technically way better, but not as fun on stage...

The YOung Fresh Fellows are one of those groups that I can guarantee that I will like over half the stuff on each album. Not many groups can consistantly put out good album after good album, along with killer singles. Excellent work, Rob.

Sorry, sport, but there's no way in hell I'd back you up on the "technically way better" angle for Chuck, either. Have you *seen* Kurt play, for God's sake? :-)

ah rob, this does indeed look really great. kurt bloch is definitely fun fun live - i don't have enough guitar brains to say much about who is a better technician, though.

You fiend, you've beaten me to the punch. Maybe I'll do a companion disc to this one. I LOVE THE FELLOWS. Seeing them is a religious experience. Best show I EVER saw - and they played to about 35 people. I have Chuck sympaties, though - I think he may be better suited to the Fellows. Of course, Kurt is on "This one's for the ladies", my fave release. Much has been said of the VU or Big Star, in that whoever saw/heard them instantly started a band. That comment should be reserved for the mighty Fellows. Kurt is a genius player, Scott is a brilliant songwriter - the last 2 Minus Five recordings (including the new tour disc) are among his best work.

By the way, great seletion of tunes. It's really hard to limit them to just one disc. For those not in the know, "This ones for the ladies" and "Men who loved music" are great places to start your Fellows collection. You can NEVER say enough good things about the Fellows. ONce I realized that they, my all-time favorite non-60s band, couldn't get arrested, I knew that my life in music was hopeless. I could make the same comment about the sadly-departed Fastbacks, too. This world doesn't deserve either band.

One more thing about Chuck v. Kurt. The Fellows lost much of their country sensibilities (at least live), due to Kurt's influence (since he's not a country fan). I think Chuck is a great rock n roll player - he's just a bit more nrbq than say Kurt (who might have metal skeletons in his closet).
