No ordinary knob-twiddler gets to produce a Madonna album, but she’s rather famously willing to gamble on an up-and-comer if he can translate the sound in her head into a hit. Ex-boyfriend Stephen Bray got his big break co-producing [i]Like a Virgin[/i]; later, he masterminded the Jets’ synth-pop bouncefest “Sendin’ All My Love.” Bray’s partner in audio wizardry on [i]Like a Virgin[/i] was Chic’s Nile Rodgers, whose résumé reads like a Who’s Who of beat-driven chart-toppers, from Diana Ross (“I’m Coming Out”) to Duran Duran (“Wild Boys”). And just when you think you’ve got a handle on Madonna’s latest sound, she ratchets the wheel in the other direction, as with songwriter/producer/keyboardist Stuart Price (a.k.a. Jacques Lu Cont), heard here with Les Rythmes Digitales & Shannon on “Take a Little Time.”
