Comment:

In the decade that passed between [i]Birth of the Cool[/i] and the cool's graduation anthem, [i]Kind of Blue[/i], a clutch of players got hip to the fact that bebop was no longer on top. Like Moses at the head of the Israelites, Miles Davis led jazz through the wilderness, as members of the tribe detoured into avant-garde, free jazz, and various other byways. No one could have predicted that Miles would come out the other side in electric fusion territory, and not everyone followed him there, but these artists all could be found at some point along the arc of Miles' trajectory.
