Comment:
80 minutes of Townes, all pulled from his late 60's/early 70's prime. In theory, I'd introduce someone to Townes by sending them to buy "Live at the Old Quarter"; once their appetite was whetted for more, though, I'd give them this comp. In the case of songs for which there are several recorded versions, I've indicated which version I've used in brackets. For the most part, I tried to use the studio versions of the tracks, even if I marginally preferred the "Old Quarter" versions; "Kathleen" and "Loretta" are the only exceptions. I'm sad that nothing from his incredibly dated-sounding and overly ornate "First Album" made it here, because it was the first thing that I got; I'm also sort of sad that I had to cut the song from "Delta Momma Blues" ("Nothin'") that I intended to include.Feedback:
isn't the first album actually the best one? but this is of course great.
My favorite Townes albums (if you're not counting the live record that I mentioned in the comments) are the self-titled third record, "The Late, Great Townes Van Zandt" and "Our Mother the Mountain". I even like "High, Low and In Between" more than the first album. So I guess my answer, Peter, is "not even close", IMHO. :-) Glad you like the mix, though.
kathleen is one opf the best sad songs ever, the opening lines is incredible, right ?
Townes is too sad for words. As Steve Earle said - "great friend, bad influence." What a voice. Thanks for hipping me to that live rekkid, Robbo. Or should I say, Rob Van Zandt? I like that - it's got a good Metal-god sound to it.
No wait, ... Rob Van Conroy is much better. No? Conroy with a K, then?
I'll echo Rob's recommendation for "Live At the Old Quarter." I put off getting it for awhile because I already had other versions of the song. I finally picked it up (at the public library where it was filed under jazz) and it blew me away. A great, great album. Get that one first, then buy all the rest. And don't forget Steve Earle's touching tribute "Fort Worth Blues" (and Guy Clark's cover of that song which I think is even better than Earle's version).
