Comment:

Once you get beyond its hits ("Elenore" and "You Showed Me") you realize The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands is a flat-out amazing album. Yes, it's a tongue-in-cheek collection, but its mostly original cuts cast a spotlight on the band's (underutilized) songwriting strengths. Consider the title track and "Surfer Dan," a send-up of the omnipresent surf culture that's simultaneously one of the best songs the genre ever produced. Another album well worth digging into is Wooden Head, a career-end collection of tracks from the band's early years; tracks like the snarling "Tie Me Down," written by future Bread frontman David Gates, and the original "She'll Come Back," a song that'll leave you wondering why the band didn't write a whole lot more of their material.
