The The's Matt Johnson got his view on nighttime London early, growing up over his dad's popular pub and checking out the rockers and bluesmen performing at his uncle's nightclubs. Inspired, young Matt had his first band by the time he was 11, but even when he was all grown up and going by The The, he carried a kid's restless energy into making music that evolved along with his own shifting fascinations — and revolving-door bandmates. Johnson's smooth, moody vocals, razor-sharp lyrics, and flair for atmosphere thread together tunes marked by a wandering sonic spirit.
