Comment:

elvis (costello) is king! declan patrick (aloysius) macManus. he looked like buddy holly's cranky younger brother. but sounded like the musical revolution. his lyrically charged tales of rejection, dejection (and sometimes affection) first lured me in with the bittersweet "alison." a pretty tune with heart- wrenching verse, double entendre & great vocal delivery. songs from seven vinyl records. at just under 74 minutes. the perfect "costello for dummies." ha.

It's great to see how Mr. Costello has weathered over the years. In college, I was one of the 1st to break from the "rock" diet and welcome Costello, Talking Heads, The Jam, Sex Pistols, etc...and I got my balls busted to no end...until it became "en vogue" (then they all wanted to borrow my LP's). Nice mix...but I might engage in a coffee-house debate that "Iggy" is [true] king of the punks.

ahhh. mr. osterberg. it's all relative to musical situation. i do love some stooges every now and then...

A cool primer (once again, check out my two-volume "More like a hand job than a hand jive" set--we picked a lot of the same stuff, I think). I'd go with Mr. Osterberg, too, as "king of the punks", although one of Elvis' main attributes was how quickly he transcended the whole punk movement. Just a thought...

again. very relative statement--king of the punks. but each is entitled to her/his opinion. i happen to like veronica. so there you go.

I don't understand how you seemed to read something unpleasant in my last statement... I was complimenting your mix and adding something to the "king of punks" discussion. Perhaps I neglected to say that I don't view Costello as a "punk" at all, and neither does Mr. Costello, for that matter (and although I like a lot of punk stuff, for sure, I regard this as a positive, rather than a negative, thing). Putting your first record out on Stiff in 1977 and having some angry lyrics does not necessarily make you a punk...

i didn't read your last statement as unpleasant. i was just stating difference of opinion. i appreciate your comments. no harm, no foul.

Me, too. Glad we're on the same page. It's hard to interpret this stuff sometimes... :-)
