Trisha Yearwood
Comment:
Because Yearwood is a song interpreter, rather than a singer-songwriter, her albums rise and fall on the quality of the tunes she chooses, and she has a nearly infallible ear. For instance, her unadorned cover of "Sad Eyes," Bruce Springsteen's underappreciated gem from his Tracks boxed set, brings a bittersweet feminine vulnerability to the original. She deftly avoids syrupy over-sentimentality, though, on her version of the Linda Ronstadt/Andrew Gold-penned "Try Me Again." And she seizes former NRBQ frontman Al Anderson's "Pistol," riding it like a bronco as her full-throated vocal belts out with the kick of a runaway freight train.
