Reinvention, rather than regurgitation, runs through our sampling of Police cover tracks. South African soul diva Dilana, runner-up on the second season of CBS television’s [i]Rock Star[/i], converts “Roxanne” into a sister-to-sister career-counseling session in that twilight zone where Oprah and Aretha join forces. UB40 injects “Every Breath You Take” with a double-shot of Jamaican bay rum, nurturing the reggae seed from the original into a lush, tropical garden. And Grace Jones ratchets “Demolition Man” in the opposite direction, sucking every degree of heat from the tune — a bloodless discotheque assassin decked out in Armani, dropping funk-fortified beats like so many victims. But don’t stop exploring there; bands from John Mayer to Alanis Morissette have taken a whack at the Police’s musical piñata to get at the sweet musical surprises inside.
