Similar Sounds - The World of The Police
Comment:
Like Orwell predicted in 1984, there was no escaping the Police, and many of their charting contemporaries seemed to run along parallel lines. Blondie followed Police procedure career-wise, from their bleach-scoured punk roots (in “Hanging on the Telephone”) to their soca (for soul-calypso) cover of the Paragons’ “The Tide Is High.” And when head Talking Head David Byrne went mental in “Once in a Lifetime,” Sting’s brain reeled in sympathy on Ghost In the Machine’s “Too Much Information.” Much like the Police, XTC displayed a genius gift for hook-intensive pop, and their “Generals and Majors” recalls the drum-majorette precision of “Don’t Stand So Close to Me.” Perhaps the least expected member of this club is Split Enz, whose musical arc only briefly intersected the Police’s at “I Got You,” staking out the eerie, back alley stalker terrain inhabited by “Every Breath You Take.”
