The Walkmen
Comment:
When critics declared Jonathan Fire*Eater the "future of rock 'n' roll" and consumers responded with a resounding "huh?," the band didn't fill their empty beer bottles to the brim with tears. They split up while the going was good, with three-fourths of Fire*Eater's capable and clever ranks joining the Walkmen alongside Hamilton Leithauser and Peter Bauer of the "lo-fi-'til-we-die" Recoys. The result: an indie rock supergroup of sorts, one that defies all logic with each passing album. That includes everything from their subdued and startling drifter-in-the-dark debut (Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone) to the savage right hooks of Bows + Arrows. Not to mention the rewards that come with repeated listens, including the jackhammer drums of Matt Barrick and Leithauser's drunken sailor approach to singing.
