Comment:

At last! I have got around to producing a mix I feel is worthy of AoTM :)This is essentially a gamelan themed piece, although now I look at it very few genuine gamelans have got on it; the theme was more to encompass percussive instruments (marimbas, vibraphones, glockenspiels, xylophones, etc) played in a repetitive pattern. This is an idea I've been mulling over for the past few months and sourcing tracks from my collection. You know how it is, you have a memory of a track that might fit but when you listen to it, it's entirely inappropriate. Or you stumbled across a track by accident (in the case of Popul Vuh here, which I hadn't listened to for ages). I was surprised by how many tracks ended up 'on the cutting room floor' as it were, not enough for a volume two (yet) but it means this one has the choice cuts. The Vangelis track surprised me, I used to listen to early Vangelis when I was a kid and wouldn't have known a gamelan if it bit me on the bum, so I didn't realise the Freefall track was his take on a gamelan. The Muzag: Muzagelan track is, indeed, me - it's something I wrote on the computer last year, it's simplistic but fits in okay (don't worry, at least it's short). So, there you go, it's an 80 minute CD (77:19) and all tracks are edited & segue and, frankly, I'm quite chuffed with it :)

the only song I know from this is the "six marimbas", but this is such a cool concept, and such a witty title!

hehe, I learned about the gamelan in IB music last year. And I got tmess around with some gamelan instruments, too!

I must find some of these songs!

Sounds really kewl! However, the xylophone-like instrument found in gamelan orchestras is called gender, the "g" pronounced like the word "girl." The term "gamelan orchestra" is essentially redundant, since gamelan means an orchestra consisting of gender, drums, gongs, etc. Peace.

What a great mix CD! Muzag is right, the Vangelis track fits in surprisingly well! (I too remember that track from the '70s and wasn't too taken with it then--but here it makes perfect sense.) Excellent segues from track to track as well. Wonderful for late night listening. Recommended!
