Comment:

Patti Smith had already made a name for herself as a poet and rock writer when, in the mid-'70s, she took the New York City scene by storm, setting her potent, stream-of-consciousness lyrics to down-and-dirty pre-punk music and staging now-famous shows that made the most of her hypnotic presence. Songs like the autobiographical "P**s Factory," about working on a Detroit assembly line, and the runaway rocker "Free Money" announced a totally new presence. But more than 30 years later, Smith, a 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, has amassed a mind-boggling body of work, touching on everything from a cappella stage-stormers ("Babelogue") to steamy, one-of-a-kind ballads ("Dancing Barefoot") to life-affirming power-pop anthems ("People Have the Power"). For faithful followers and newcomers alike, we bring together the best of Smith's brilliance into one very essential Essentials.
