No way. That’s where our Sad Songs Essentials comes in, with a wallow-worthy, tear-stained set of sounds by artists who transform the ugly pitfalls of human existence into something transcendent. “Everybody Hurts,” emotes Michal Stipe on the R.E.M. morsel of truth, and Eric Carmen couldn’t agree more as he wails away on the lonesome pop heart-tugger “All By Myself,” while George Jones finally finds a cure for lovesickness on the country stunner “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” and Johnny Cash embodies a whole world of pain on the acoustic hair-raiser “Hurt.”
