Album Cuts - School of Rock: Classic Rock, Vol. 2
Comment:
From Fleetwood Mac to ELO, Jackson Browne to Elton John, our Album Cuts guide us past the hits' sizzle to the steak within, revealing the extra dimension that turned casual listeners into hard-core fans. In "Almost Cut My Hair," paranoia slithers out of David Crosby's primal-scream vocal like a cobra from a burlap sack, while Stephen Stills’ and Neil Young's guitars slash at each other like thugs in a knife fight. Perpetual rough boy Rod Stewart's "Mandolin Wind” — with its mélange of slide guitar and fingerpicked six-string intertwining with his sandpaper-on-crushed-velvet vocal — seems to have been delivered straight from the cream-puff center of his heart. And surprisingly, given their later sunglass-bedecked stance as sultans of cool, Steely Dan dispenses lightning-strike guitar riffs and a locomotive beat on their smarty-pants Buddhist anthem, "Bodhisattva." These tracks prove beyond question that, even in a hit-driven industry, you sometimes have to rub the lamp a little longer to unleash the genie.
