Studio Stylists - School of Rock: Classic Rock, Vol. 2
Comment:
During the '70s industry-standard four-track recorders blew up like a pan of Jiffy Pop, swelling to as many as 24 tracks, and the masters of this new technology, like Todd Rundgren and Brian Eno, often outshone the acts they produced. Alan Parsons, the knob-wielding wizard who'd engineered Abbey Road and Dark Side of the Moon, fused sci-fi art-rock to a brooding disco-ball beat on "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You." On Queen's "Killer Queen," with its multitracked razor-sharp vocal harmonies and platform-shoe-chunky lead guitar, we first hear the prog-meets-glam roots of A Night at the Opera, the album that cemented their mega-stardom. But 10cc pushed the studio's capabilities almost beyond belief, painstakingly layering vocal overdubs, track upon track, to construct a 256-voice virtual choir that floated through "I'm Not in Love" like a spectral presence. Enjoy the display — these tracks are merely one tiny shelf in our auditory candy shop.
