All hail freestyle – the timeless dance music that inspired a nation of young women to don spandex biker shorts and tease bangs higher than Cameron Diaz in a Farrelly Brothers movie. For those too young to remember, freestyle emerged in the mid to late '80s as a creamy concoction of R&B vocals, Latin percussion, and electro grooves. The dominant topic: unrequited love. Its prodigies were mostly one- and two-hit wonders but its influence stretches to the far reaches of pop music.
