Willie's Legacy - The World of Willie Nelson
Comment:
Not only is Lyle Lovett the unlikeliest Texan sex symbol since . . . well, Willie, but his fluid movement between country, jazz, gospel, pop, and soul is matchless among Nelson’s musical offspring. Plus, Lovett’s “If I Had a Boat” showcases his gator-mode wit, deceptively laid-back on the surface but capable of delivering a serious bite. Shooter Jennings, Waylon’s offspring, is quite literally a second-generation outlaw, and his “It Ain’t Easy” lays a can-I-get-a-witness gospel gloss over Willie and Waylon’s hell-raising posture. And Gillian Welch, with her O-sister-where-art-thou, hillbilly-styled “Orphan Girl,” harks back to Willie’s straightforward storytelling, using nothing more complicated than a guitar and a voice or two to loft an arrow straight into its heart-shaped target. Not enough? Then feast on our buffet of musical delicacies, featuring Canadian chanteuse k.d. lang, Hoosier heartland rocker John Mellencamp, Texas alt-country faves the Old 97’s, and more — all infused with Willie’s sweet and smoky spice.
