Elvis Costello
Comment:
Combine Costello's beguiling talent as a songwriter and performer with his unique combination of creativity and curiosity, and you've got a body of work that demands the deepest exploration. Even as early as 1979, Elvis tweaked expectations — putting the cool-crooning jazz standard “My Funny Valentine” on the B-side of his anti-British-military indictment, “Oliver’s Army.” He did it again with a twang and a Nudie-clad nod to country-rock godfather Gram Parsons, reworking the Flying Burrito Brothers’ “Hot Burrito #1” as “I’m Your Toy.” But nothing could’ve prepared his audiences for the matchup with classical music’s Brodsky Quartet, merging high and low art with lit-crit lyrics in “Jacksons, Monk and Rowe.” Keep listening and you’ll discover why his blood-oath-loyal fans consider deep cuts like “King Horse,” “Watch Your Step,” and “All This Useless Beauty” every bit the equal of signature songs like “Alison” and “Accidents Will Happen.”
