Comment:

Anyone who listened closely to Elvis Costello's 1977 debut knew there was more to him than the snarling angry-young-man label he was saddled with at the time. From then until now, he's waged a career that continues to shatter boundaries and expectations with the confident creative abandon that usually defines the briefest "peak period" of other artists. Always working above and ahead of fashion, Costello made an album of Gram Parsons and George Jones covers a decade before “alt country” was a genre, interpreted standards before any rock star would be caught dead with a Tony Bennett album, and recorded orchestral pop while his contemporaries buried themselves in synthesizers and drum machines. But no matter where his muse leads him, he can’t seem to shake his innate pop sensibilities for an unshakable hook and an uncanny lyric. From his most recognized to his most overlooked songs, nearly everything he has recorded deserves — and rewards — your attention.
