Comment:
Not meant to be comprehensive of the thriving/troubled African music scene. I mean, the closest I've come to Africa was doing a research paper on the Congo (formerly known as Zaire, one of the top 5 places I would like to visit if it wasn't so gosh-dern dangerous). So as I was saying...A little bit of African pop, a little bit of ambient synth type stuff with some traditional chanting, some masterful guitar work courtesy of Ali Farka Toure, some mindblowing drumming that goes on for nearly ten minutes, and of course, I wouldn't rob myself of the a capella stylings of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I'm glad I fought the temptation of a ton of rap songs talking about their homeland and what-not and I'm just as glad I didn't include any ska songs about rescuing Mandela. Anyway, I must needs prepare for my journey to the Congo.Feedback:
can't say that i've heard of any of these bands, but sounds cool. are you preparing to go to congo really?
This looks good, esp. Ali Farka Toure picks.
nice work, posing one. you're all over the place these days! awesome.
Excellent. I love to see (hear) these types of mixes posted. Inspired.
thanks for the kind words kids. i'd like to visit the congo...but there are simply too many things that could kill me, the crooked government in power (i don't trust kabila that much more than his awful daddy), the insurgents from the jungles, the tribes who eat people, abd if course killer gray gorillas. as if i didn't have to deal with enough gorillas in san jose
Maybe you should try Kenya instead (as I've been there and can't say enough about the beach paradise, Mombassa) - it's still crooked (much more so than when I was there 10 years ago) but it's a lot safer than the congo!
This is one of those great mixes that makes me feel so clueless because I've heard none of this stuff. Then it makes me happy later, after I've found the stuff and listened to it.
